Shodoshima is the place where Kobo Daishi trained, and a place of prayer and training for pilgrims. The 88 sacred sites of Shodoshima are approximately 38 ri (approximately 150 km) long, and include mountains, valleys, fields, and cliffs. Visitors to all 94 officially recognized sacred sites, including the six inner shrines, make the island known as an island of pilgrimage and training.
We will guide you around the sacred sites of Shodoshima in a comfortable chartered bus.

72nd Okunoin Kasagataki Sacred Site

This temple is located on the mountainside and is one of the sacred mountain sites. Access to the temple is via chains that lead up the cliff. The view from the main hall is spectacular.
No. 1 Dounzan Kannon Summer Solstice

The sunlight that shines through for about 20 days before and after the summer solstice (June 21st) miraculously creates this shape in a depression in the rock face, and the Kannon statue emerges. It is affectionately known as the Summer Solstice Kannon, which only appears at the time of the summer solstice.
No. 18 Sekimun-dong

Sekimondo Cave has been called Daishi Cave since ancient times because Kobo Daishi stayed in the cave and performed goma rituals during his training.
No. 81 Emonnotaki Waterfall Emonfudo

This temple is one of the sacred mountain sites and was built on the mountainside. 1,200 years ago, Daishi performed the secret goma ritual at the temple for 100 days, and the goma fire has never been extinguished since then.

Practicing the Ten Good Precepts
During the pilgrimage around Shodoshima, there are rules and etiquette that must be observed that have been established over a long history.
First, as a guideline for worshippers, let us make 10 vows to Buddha called the "Ten Good Precepts" and worship with a pure heart.
What are the Ten Good Precepts?
| Non-killing | We value all life. |
| No stealing | I will do something obvious. |
| Unchaste sexual intercourse | I will do pure deeds. |
| Not lying | Speak truthfully. |
| Uncool words | Speak in simple terms. |
| Badmouthing | Speak good words. |
| Unequivocal | I speak the same language to everyone. |
| Unsting and greedy | You will know when your heart is content. |
| No anger | It will put your mind at ease. |
| Fujaken | I believe in people properly. |
The kongo staff is washed and placed on the floor of the room.
As the words suggest, as pilgrims, we respect each other and greet each other with our hands clasped together.
Don't use a walking stick on the bridge
During his Shikoku Pilgrimage, Daishi rested under a bridge called Toyabashi Bridge, and so people do not use their walking sticks when crossing bridges.
The bell won't ring
The return bell is also called the departure bell (modori bell), and is used at funerals, so this was disliked.
If the temple provides incense and candles, use them.
Each temple may have candles and incense of a size appropriate for that temple prepared, to prevent any unforeseen incidents such as candles that are too small and fall out of the candle holder.
There are various etiquette rules for visiting temples that have been developed over the years. Here we will introduce them in order of the procedure.
Entering the mountain
Temples are sacred places where Buddha is enshrined, so you must first bow at the temple gate before entering the temple grounds.
At that time, if you are entering through a bell tower gate (a gate with a bell), you must ring the bell once to enter.
Hand washing
Wash your hands at the chozuya and rinse your mouth (only if the water is clean).
Bell ringing
Strike the bell in the bell tower. (Note that in some cases you may not be allowed to strike the bell.)
Visiting the main hall
Next, proceed to the main hall and offer incense and a candle, and then place your offering slip, coins, etc. in the designated places.
(*On Shodoshima, Daishi is often enshrined in the main hall rather than the Daishi Hall, so services are held there. If there is a Daishi Hall, services are also held there.)
Prayer and sutra reading
Next, worship and sutras are recited (details will be provided separately).
Offering of sutras (Noukyou)
You will receive a temple seal on your sutra book at the sutra office.
In the case of a hanging scroll, it will take time, so it may be better to request it before the sutra reading.
Descent
Finally, when you leave the temple gate, turn around and face the main hall, bow, and leave.
At this time, the bell does not ring.
The reason for this is that the bell ringing is used at funerals, so people dislike it.
The most important part of the pilgrimage is chanting sutras and offerings to the principal image of each temple and to the Great Master.
All of the temples on Shodoshima are Shingon Buddhist temples that receive the teachings of the Great Master, so please perform your prayers according to the "Order of Practice" below.
